In 2005, Globacom and the Confederation of African Football (CAF) signed a partnership agreement for the sponsorship of the annual CAF Player of the Year Awards. The attendant glamour of the ceremonies organized by Globacom has since elevated the awards, hitherto a footnote in Africa’s football calendar, to a major event in the global football chart.
The GLO-CAF Awards has been attended by global football bigwigs like Sepp Blatter, the FIFA President, Mitchel Platini, the UEFA President and Alhaji Isa Hayatou, the CAF President. Blatter once described the event, which had a unique blend of pan-African dance, music and choreography, as the best award ceremony he had witnessed. The Glo-CAF Awards has so far been held in Nigeria, Ghana and Togo. The 2011 edition took place in Accra, the capital city of Ghana on Thursday, 22nd December, 2011.
