In order to bond more effectively with the youths in Nigeria, National Telecom Operator, Globacom in September 2008 flagged off a nationwide entertainment project, Rock ‘n’ Rule, to take the icon of the nation’s music and entertainment industry on a flamboyant tour of key cities across the country.

Imagine a musical concert which paraded award winning music stars such as D’Banj, P-Square, 9ice, Sammy Okposo, Mode 9, Sani Danja, Pasuma, Sunny Nneji, Mamuzee, DJ Zeez, Original Stereoman, Ego and Ghana’s top female musician and MTV Base Award winner, Becca. That was the length Globacom went to serve Nigerian youths in 18 locations a full doze of free entertainment coupled with an opportunity to win unprecedented prizes. The show indeed was one of the biggest experiential testimonials of the Rule Your World mantra of Glo!

As the stars criss-crossed the 18 cities that spanned Benin, Asaba, Awka, Enugu, Owerri, Aba, Port Harcourt, Uyo, Calabar, Ibadan, Akure, Lokoja, Makurdi, Kaduna, Abuja, Ilorin, Oshogbo and Lagos, Globacom gave the youths a firm and incontrovertible reason to believe that they can, like the stars, live their dreams.

Apart from the performances by the star studded acts, Globacom also gave opportunity to youngsters in the cities visited to display their skills in front of a thick crowd which sometimes numbered about sixty thousand people.

For the youth, the highlight was the Mr. and Miss Rock ‘N’ Rule contest which gave youngsters the opportunity to convincingly prove that Naija has not only got breathtakingly beautiful youths but also talented youths. For some of the contestants, it was their very first time in front of such a large audience at such a huge platform.

Apart from those who strutted on the runway, others had the opportunity to sing and dance for prizes with the audience as the judge. Young boys and girls had the opportunity to compete spontaneously in dancing and singing and winners were instantly rewarded with 21-inch colour TV and mobile phones in all the cities. For the winners, it was a firm expression of empowerment from Glo.

Globacom was on a familiar terrain with youth engagement packages. In 2004, when the company introduced Campus Storm, it was designed at that time to bring unrivalled music experience to the various campuses across the country. That programme served as the pivot of Globacom’s youth engagement activities and was implemented strictly for undergraduates in tertiary institutions.

Rock ‘n’ Rule was not only expansion of Campus Storm to take care of youths all over the country, it also incorporated a beauty pageant that empowered the winners to truly rock and rule. The winners in both male and female categories in each of the 18 cities collected the sum of N250,000 while the first runner-up won N150,000. The second runner-up won the sum of N100,000. Each of the winners also got high end mobile phones and Glo SIM cards.

The 18 male and 18 female winners secured qualification to participate in the national finals in Lagos where the winner in both categories will win the sum of N3 million plus a brand new BMW 3-Series.

Globacom has thus provided them with the platform to showcase their talents and empowered them not only with the fabulous prizes given out at the concerts but also with the confidence to excel in their various endeavours.
