Glo XMS FAQs

1) Q: What is the GLO XMS service?
a. GLO XMS allows you to send and receive SMS with your XMS App while you are on a DATA (2G/3G/WiFi) connection. Meaning you have 1 App for all your messaging!

– XMS is a messaging app like many others (WhatsApp etc.) but with XMS you can also send SMS!
– You could XMS people who also have the XMS App – and you can SMS the people who don’t have the app – all from 1 App!
– SMS via the XMS App is much cheaper than normal SMS!
– You can use WEB-XMS and send/receive SMS via any PC/Tablet device – even without a SIM

2) Q: How to start the GLO XMS service? How to activate a voucher?
a. Install XMS on your smartphone – go to http://xms.me or use your phone’s appstore – then download the XMS App. After installation you will get a welcome message inside the XMS Bot.
To start GLO XMS, send the keywords “START GLO” to that XMS Bot. With this you are activation your first ‘voucher’.

3) Q: What is the XMS BOT?
a. The XMS Bot is an account created by XMS to introduce you to the features and functionality of XMS. Just drop XMS Bot a message, and he will reply you back and tell more about the application.
If you would like to use Web XMS and you request a login code, it will be sent to you via XMS Bot.

4) Q: What is the Globacom BOT?
a. The Globacom Bot is an account created by GLO XMS to introduce you to the features and functionality of GLO XMS. Just drop XMS Bot a message, and he will reply you back and tell more about the keywords you can send. Via this bot you can start and stop your GLO XMS service.

5) Q: What is a voucher?
a. A voucher is like a scratch-card which you buy for topping-up your normal phone number. You activate the voucher, then use it and then you will get a new voucher again. Etc.

6) Q: Is the service free?
a. For the first 10.000 people the first voucher is free, yes! Afterwards the price per voucher is 30 Naira.

7) Q: How can I activate my friends who are not on GLO?
a. The nice thing is that you can enable your MTN, Etisalat, Airtel etc. friends too! They have to download and install XMS from http://xms.me and then YOU are transferring your 30N to them!

HOW? Just use your GLO XMS App and send this to the Globacom BOT: “START 30 MSISDN” where MSISDN is your friends non-GLO phone number and 30 is the voucher for non-GLO subscribers.

EXAMPLE: In the Globacom Bot you send: START 30 2347099999999
(where 2347099999999 is your friends phone number)

– Your friend gets activated and he gets a 30 Naira voucher with 24 credits! He can send and receive XMS-2-SMS messages like you. He will get a GLO Virtual Number and via the XMS App he can send (and receive) very cheap XMS-2-SMS messages!

– On your GLO account 30 Naira is deducted. This will only happen once! After 7 days the voucher of your friend will expire and he cannot use the service anymore… unless you activate him again!

8) Q: Can I also activate other GLO subscribers?
a. Yes, that’s possible! You can thus transfer your 30N to another GLO sub! You are paying for the other GLO subscriber.

HOW? Just use your GLO XMS App and send this to the Globacom BOT: “START 30 MSISDN” where MSISDN is your friends GLO phone number and 30 is the voucher.

EXAMPLE: In the Globacom Bot you send: START 30 2348099999999
(where 2348099999999 is your friends phone number)

If the other GLO sub wants to have a subscription too (meaning the 1st voucher is paid by you and the 2nd and next vouchers are paid by himself) then use your GLO XMS App and send this to the Globacom BOT: “START GLO MSISDN” where MSISDN is your friends GLO n phone umber and GLO is the voucher.

EXAMPLE: In the Globacom Bot you send: START GLO 2348099999999
(where 2348099999999 is your friends phone number)

9) Q: What is my remaining number of credits? What’s my balance?
a. Send the keyword ‘BALANCE’ to the GLOBACOM Bot. You will then receive a message with the exact number of credits left (and the validity period of your voucher).

10) Q: I have a total of 24 credits on my voucher after activation – what can I do with that?
a. You can send for example 24 SMS messages ONNET – to GLO subscribers or,
b. You can send 24 SMS messages OFFNET – to other Nigerian subscribers – or a mix of this.
c. The voucher validity is 7 days

Note that if you send a SMS to someone for the first time, this person gets an explanation SMS too. This SMS is charged like any other message, but it’s only sent once!

11) Q: What are the costs per SMS message?
a. For 30 Naira you get a voucher of 24 credits. Every ONNET and every OFFNET message costs 1 credit.
– ONNET = 1,25 Naira/SMS
– OFFNET = 1,25 Naira/SMS

12) Q: The voucher is valid for 7 days. What does that mean? What happens afterwards?
a. You can use your credits within the 7 days after activation. After 7 days a new voucher will be automatically activated for you. You don’t need to do anything for that – only make sure you have sufficient credits on your GLO account.
The price is 30 naira for the new voucher. Credits which were left on the previous voucher are expired.

13) Q: How does the GLO XMS service works in detail?
After activation you will get a new Virtual GLO number. You can see the number in the SETTINGS screen of the XMS App. In your CONTACTS list you will see your contacts with a GLO logo on top of it. Those are contacts without the XMS App so you can SMS them!
Your friends will receive the SMS from your new Virtual GLO number. They can also reply to that number and you will get the SMS inside your XMS App – like a complete chat experience!

A conversation should always start at the XMS user. The other person can then reply to your Virtual Number – and you will get the SMS in your XMS App. In case his phone number is already in your XMS address-book, he can also start the conversation and send an SMS to your Virtual Number.

14) Q: Will I get a warning when I’m about to reach 0 credits on my voucher?
a. Yes, you will get a warning message. However, with a subscription your voucher will be automatically topped-up in time and you are notified of that too.

15) Q: What happens with my credits after 7 days?
a. After 7 days your voucher will expire. A new voucher with new credits will be automatically activated for you for the new period. Credits which were left on the previous voucher are expired.

16) Q: How does the explanation message works?
a. When sending SMS messages to someone via your XMS app – the recipient will always first get an explanation message to explain where the SMS is coming from. That only happens once! All the next SMS messages will not have the additional explanation message.

Text of the explanation message is: “I, XMS_ID (MSISDN) now use VIRTUAL_NUMBER to send SMS via my XMS App. Save this new number to SMS me!”

The XMS_ID = the name you entered on XMS registration
MSISDN = your normal phone number
VIRTUAL_NUMBER = your new GLO XMS Virtual Number

Example: “I, John (2348123456789) now use 2348123456780 to send SMS via my XMS App. Save this new number to SMS me!”

17) Q: I added a new contact in my phone but cannot see this contact in the XMS address book.
a. In the XMS App you can check inside the address book in the contacts tab – there all your XMS and SMS contacts are shown. The SMS contacts have the GLO logo on top of them.

If you just added a new contact into your phone address book, you might need to sync again – for that close the XMS App and restart it – then the new contact will be shown inside the XMS address book. Switching between the tabs XMS and ALL also causes the App to sync for you!

18) Q: If I send a SMS message to an OFFNET recipient, will an explanation message be send too?
a. Yes, if you send a SMS message via the XMS App to an OFFNET friend (but only for the first time!), he will also get 1 explanation SMS explaining the service. That message is – in case of OFFNET – charged as 1 normal SMS from your credits. All following SMS messages to that person will not have the explanation SMS added.

19) Q: Is there a message limit for XMS or SMS?
a. There is no character limitation while sending messages from XMS to XMS. However, if the size of your message exceeds 160 characters for your XMS-2-SMS, then it will be considered as more than one SMS.

20) Q: Is a data connection via 2G/3G or Wi-Fi required?
a. Yes, to make use of XMS you need to be online via your data package or via a Wi-Fi connection. If you send SMS via XMS also your data connection is used.

21) Q: Where can I find the XMS Support and FAQ?
a. Please go to this website for all the FAQ http://ebuddyxms.zendesk.com

22) Q: How can I stop this GLO XMS service?
a. Send the keyword ‘STOP’ to the GLOBACOM Bot. You can then use the voucher till either the credits are used or till the validity period is reached. You will then still be able to receive SMS from your friends but you cannot send them a SMS. For that you have to activate again first.

23) Q: I stopped the GLO XMS service and want to re-activate. How to do that?
a. Just activate the GLO XMS service via the XMS Bot. Send the keywords ‘START GLO’ to the XMS Bot. If you had the service active in the last 2 months you will get the same Virtual Number back again!

24) Q: The XMS App is not installed – I don’t get the SMS verification
a. While installing XMS, the App automatically sends an SMS from your phone, to yourself – to verify your number. This is only applicable for Android. Make sure you have sufficient credits to send this SMS. The XMS App is then automatically reading this SMS – and your number is verified!

For iPhone, Windows Phone and Blackberry you will receive a verification SMS. Sometimes it could happen this SMS is not directly delivered due to the nature of the routes SMS providers are using to get the SMS delivered. In that case, please try again!

Always make sure to add your phone number correctly, like for example +234811xxxxxx and not +2340811xxxxxx (so remove the 0).

25) Q: Receiving SMS messages on your Virtual Number?
a. A conversation should always start at the XMS user. The other person can then reply to your Virtual Number – and you will get the SMS in your XMS App. In case the recipients phone number is already in your XMS address-book, he can also start the conversation and send an SMS to your Virtual Number.

This is very convenient if you are at your computer and you don’t want to switch to mobile every now and then to write a message.
c. Different ways of user discovery: you can find friends on XMS not only from phone book as in WhatsApp, but also through Facebook and Google. Some users feel that giving away phone number is too personal, so we also added a feature to share your XMS PIN (similar to BBM).
d. XMS has a nearby feature: it allows to see whether your XMS friends and/or other XMS users are around.
e. Stickers and chat bubbles to make pictures more personal and fun: we have implemented dozens of stickers to personalize pictures users send on XMS.
f. With XMS it’s possible to e-mail your chat history to any mail recipient.
g. It’s possible to make contacts as favorite – leaving them on top of your conversations.
h. XMS has fully integrated maps with POI’s (Point Of Interests) – also a user can choose to use Maps or Google Maps.
