Glo/CAF salute our young men and women footballers who have been plying their trade with all sense of responsibility and dignity all over the world. We are proud as Africans when we watch their soccer dexterity in various clubs and competitions across Europe and other parts of the world. Their football sense and artistry has given us the hope that one day, an African nation will win the FIFA World Cup. We salute their courage, commitment and humility on and outside the field of play. They have proved that they are worthy ambassadors of their fatherlands. Their successes in their various clubs have become a source of pride to all Africans.
The success of our footballers is what the Glo-CAF awards primarily stand to celebrate. Since Globacom’s partnership with the Confederation of African Football (CAF) began in 2005, not less than five African football players have emerged as the best African Footballer of the Year at the awards ceremonies held in different African countries – Abuja (2006); Accra (2007, April 2010, 2011, 2012); Lome (2008); Lagos (2009); and Cairo (Dec. 2010).
This will be the second time that Lagos will host this historic event. Lagos hosted the 2008 Glo-CAF Awards in February, 2009 where Emmanuel Adebayor won it. Other prominent footballers that have won the award include Samuel Eto’o (2005, 2010); Didier Drogba (2006, 2009); Fredie Kanoute (2007); Yaya Toure (2011, 2012).
As the countdown begins, the big question is: Who will be the king of African Football in 2013? This question will be answered by CAF in Lagos on January 9, 2014 as the new king of African football will be unveiled before top, prominent Africans in government, business and of course, football.
Glo’s partnership with CAF which is in its 8thyear, has succeeded in achieving its vision of raising the profile of African football players, just as the Glo network is dedicated to adding value to the lives of the people in the countries where we have our footprint.
